What Should You Look for in a Metro Ethernet Provider?

If you’ve got a bunch of different offices spread out around your city, metro ethernet service is a great way to link all of them together.

But with all of the competition floating around the metro ethernet industry, you’ve got to pick your provider very carefully.  Specifically, you’ve got to look for the 5 following things:

1.  Point-to-multipoint capabilities

If you’ve got several different office locations, you absolutely have to find a metro ethernet provider that can give you point-to-multipoint service.  If you only have the ability to go point-to-point, you’ll only be able to link two offices together – which eliminates the entire reason to have the service in the first place!

2.  Quick scalability

You never know when your business is going to expand – or have to contract.  So, you need a metro ethernet provider that can scale your service up and down quickly.  Luckily, the best providers will be able to make changes to your service within 24 hours of you requesting them.

Bottom line – if your potential provider can’t make changes quickly, they’re not the right provider for you!

3.  Uptime that’s virtually perfect

No metro ethernet provider can promise you 100% uptime.  However, the good ones will be able to give you the next best thing – 99.99%.  If you find a provider that’s offering anything less than this, move on.  Your business simply can’t afford to deal with any more downtime than that!

4.  Initial fees that you can work with

Before you can take advantage of metro ethernet service, you’ll need to make sure that your facility is outfitted for the connection you want (like a fiber line, for example).  If it’s not, your provider will make you pay to set everything up.

Luckily, this doesn’t have to be a budget-killer.  If you want to get a break on these initial costs, sign a longer contract.  In fact, if you’re willing to commit to your metro ethernet provider for at least three years, they may waive these initial fees altogether!

Even if your office is already outfitted, you may have to pay a “cross-connection fee”.  Again, though, you may be able to get this waived if you’re willing to commit to a longer contract.

5.  Bandwidth that’s just right

A good metro ethernet provider will offer speeds up to 10 Gbps – meaning they’ll easily be able to accommodate the video, voice, and other high-tech needs that your big business takes advantage of on a daily basis.  They’ll also offer symmetrical speed, so that you’ll be able to work efficiently no matter what.
